Looking at this picture again after today's rehearsal, I immediately notice the size of the stage, and how right Matt was to move all the chairs in. There really isn't much space for how many characters there are! So, being bunched together the whole play, it is easy to see how tensions rise so quickly.
Also, notice the picnic bench on the left: 5 people are seated there, filling out the bench. The character closest to the camera (Santos?) is turned towards Irene in the middle, while Jack and Jason off to the right and farther upstage are also turned towards Irene in the middle. So, like Matt said today, the focus point of the stage is in the middle, where Irene stands, and so she holds the position of power in the scene at this moment (a fact that looks like it is making Jack visibly upset!)
